You can also check the company’s Better Business Bureau profile. BBB accreditation is voluntary, so lack of accreditation does not automatically mean a business is unreliable. However, the profile may give you useful information about the company, its history, complaints, and how concerns have been handled.

A contractor should be able to show you examples of similar projects.

Look for:

Photos of completed driveway projects
Recent Google, Facebook, Yelp, or other customer reviews
References when appropriate

Pay attention to more than the star rating. Read what customers say about communication, scheduling, workmanship, and how the company responded when something did not go perfectly.

If a business responds professionally to reviews—including negative ones—that can also give you an idea of how responsive they may be if you ever have a concern.

An active website or social media presence can be another useful signal. It does not guarantee quality, but regular updates during the busy season can show that the company is active, organized, and continuing to complete real projects.

Ask How Scheduling Works

Scheduling is easy to overlook when comparing estimates, but it can make a big difference in your experience.

Some sealcoating contractors keep prices low by fitting small residential jobs around larger projects. That may work perfectly well if you are flexible, but it can also mean you are given a general time frame rather than a firm date.

Ask before you hire:

Can I choose a specific date?
How far in advance will the work be scheduled?
What happens if weather delays the project?
How much notice will I receive if the schedule changes?

For sealcoating, scheduling matters because you will need to keep vehicles off the driveway while the material dries. Plan on being without vehicle access for at least 48 hours after the work is completed, or longer if conditions require it.

Be Cautious With Door-to-Door Offers

Be especially careful if someone arrives at your home without an appointment and offers to work on your driveway immediately.

A common home-improvement scam involves someone claiming to be working nearby or to have extra asphalt or materials left over from another job. They may offer a special price that is only available if you agree right away.

Reputable sealcoating contractors may market door to door, so an unsolicited visit alone does not prove anything is wrong. The red flags are pressure, vague pricing, no written estimate, questionable contact information, or an unwillingness to let you verify the business before work begins.
